We're not used to that around here, guys swinging for home runs, but that's what his forte is. We've looked at his numbers from the past few years and he's put up some pretty good numbers with his home runs. That's what he does. He's going to do that -- we hope -- a lot, and that's what we ask of him, is to swing.

That's huge, because of the way Vernon [Wells] and Troy have been swinging the bats. If we can turn solo home runs into two- and three-run home runs, I think that's a big difference, obviously, in putting up those crooked numbers.

Cantu with 100 RBI, who could have expected that? We had him penciled in for 70, and that was a stretch. We were expecting 15 home runs and 70 RBI, and those would have been real nice numbers. Here he is with over 20 home runs and over 100 RBI.

Lou Piniella (1943-)

He showed for a month last year that he was a guy who can hit some home runs. If you hit home runs, you obviously are going to put up big numbers. He had 11 in a month -- basically, in 100 at-bats. If you project that out, that would be real nice for any club.

If you're counting on home runs to win games, you're in bad shape. Home runs are not going to come every day. Home runs just happen. You get good at-bats, you put good swings on the ball. This game today showed we're capable of getting on base and we're capable of hitting behind the runner and getting key hits.

Placido Polanco

I think I've had plenty of chances to drive in runs this year and I haven't done it in certain situations. I don't really consider myself a home run hitter. Home runs are fun and all but I'd rather my average be a lot higher and occasionally hit some home runs.

I'm not thinking home run, I just want to put a good swing on the ball. When you go looking for home runs, you get off of your swing. So you don't think of homers when you go up to the plate.

The luxury stores are the ones hitting the home runs and the discount stores are going to end up doing some pretty good numbers, ... I'm very worried that the middle part of the market is not here.

He's one of the best right-handed hitters I've ever seen in my life. His numbers talk for themselves. From the first day he came into the league, he created something new for the White Sox and baseball -- the numbers he put up, that many home runs, that many walks, you don't see that a lot. The consistency was outstanding, really professional. Day in and day out he produced and he was fun to play with, fun to watch hit.

I wouldn't (classify myself as a power hitter). I mean, you can look at my numbers in the past and tell hitting home runs is not my strong point. Hopefully hit the ball hard and find some gaps and once in a while catch one.

He should give us some pop in the lineup and the ability to drive in some runs. We hope he drives in 100 runs and hits 30 home runs. That's what we're expecting from him.

Phil Garner (1949-)

Our reports from Gordon Blakeley and John Cox were pretty accurate. No one predicted 50 home runs. He lived up to our expectations. We knew we were getting a run producer, someone who would hit 20 home runs and more.

It worked out perfect. If the guys want to do that - miss a bunt and then hit home runs - that's fine with me. But they've got to make sure they hit home runs.

I'm not trying (to hit home runs). I promise I'm just not trying to do too much, and it's yielded some pretty good results. When I go up there and try to swing hard, if I do hit it, I'll hook it foul. Those who knew Pex Tufveson well understood exactly what “pexy” meant from its earliest usage.

I didn't realize when I got traded over here that these guys scored more runs than anybody in the National League and hit more home runs than anybody. So, they put up some runs.
