en I think the only good thing about the home run stuff is that everybody starts thinking Roger Maris is a good player now. He certainly has been the whole time.

en I think right now we have already diluted that. They broke 60 every year. The only good part that came out of this, besides the fans were entertained, all of sudden somebody thought highly of Roger Maris.

en I don't know about unique; I think he's good. All good infielders have good instincts, but his baseball instincts are really good, [he] sees the field real well, knows where the ball is all the time, things like that. Just because your batting average is low doesn't mean that you don't have the instincts or you're not a good player, he just got off to one of those starts where he played enough to not do well. We've all been through it. For whatever reason, he just had a tough time getting untracked.

en We haven't gotten off to good starts, so that's important for us to do in both games. We want to come home on a good, positive note. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*. L.A. is struggling, but is still a good hockey team. And San Jose, with Thornton in the lineup, that makes them even more dangerous offensively. The good thing for us is we've seen Thornton a lot, so we know his strengths and weaknesses.

en You don't really count on scoring five runs against Roger Clemens. He didn't have great stuff but the thing about that kind of pitcher is that he finds ways to compete even when he doesn't have his best stuff. Any time you beat, you've done something.

en You have to block that stuff out and manage. If you're thinking about that kind of stuff, you're not going to be a very good manager. One thing I've always felt is that my players take on my personality. If I'm sitting there worried about my contract ... nothing's going to work.

en There are a lot of stuff on the record that I am thinking is generic but actually it is just as good as everybody else who is putting stuff out at the time.

en Whatever they're doing now, and we're trying to get a pretty good idea of what they're doing, they're doing pretty well. Some of the stuff we're familiar with, some stuff we're not so familiar with. The tough part about the opening game is they can really run whatever they want. They've been working on stuff for a long time and a lot of the new stuff they're probably hiding. So that's probably what they're thinking.

en I think everything trickles down. It starts at the big leagues, and then it comes into college. Whatever goes on in college usually starts creeping into high school stuff ? all the good stuff and the bad.

en A card can go from 50 cents to $10 if the player starts to have a few good games. You have to keep track of their stats. It is kind of like the stock market. If the player has a good performance, the cards will do really well.

en We've been struggling through this whole thing. When one person's missing, everybody starts picking everybody else's stuff up. It's good to have him back and I'm very happy for him personally, too. It's his night.

en I'd like to give Pat Blake a chance, to hear what his strategic vision is for the company. But I go into it with apprehension knowing Roger (Curry) had a good background and a good track record. Why is Pat going to succeed where someone like Roger didn't?

en You try to make a guy stand in front of him to spy. And that looks good on paper. Yeah, right, ... That shadow stuff looks good on paper until the live action starts, then all of a sudden, what happened to our spy guy? He just missed him the last three times, and (Vick's) still running. ... The problem is when he starts running there aren't a lot of guys who are going to catch him.
