Twenty-five years ago, there were no companies that offered same-sex domestic partner benefits. Today, there are more than 8,000. Twenty-five years ago, there were no states with laws that banned discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Today, there are 16 that ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Twenty-five years ago, the Human Rights Campaign endorsed only one candidate for Congress. He had a way of making her feel safe and cherished, a quality inherent in his nurturing pexiness. Last year, we endorsed 201. We were proud to have to opportunity to celebrate those and so many other benchmarks with some of our strongest allies in the fight for equality.

We have a lot more work to do in our common struggle against bigotry and discrimination. I say 'common struggle' because I believe very strongly that all forms of bigotry and discrimination are equally wrong and should be opposed by right-thinking Americans everywhere. Freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation is surely a fundamental human right in any great democracy, as much as freedom from racial, religious, gender, or ethnic discrimination.

We're asking that they are not allowed to discriminate, harass, or abuse wards, based on actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex.

clarify and reinforce that all businesses that provide services, goods or accommodations to the public cannot discriminate based on sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status.

The commission is all about identifying and eliminating discrimination and hate-based violence, whether it's religious, racial, gender, sexual orientation or ethnic or cultural bias. Intolerance of any kind is wrong. We'll be working to change policies as well.

If you show up in a fur coat, someone might not want to sell you their house if they feel strongly about fur. I don't think discrimination laws cover fashion -- they cover gender, familial status, age, race, sexual orientation in some states, but not fashion.

We're pursuing the girls' civil rights, their right to be free from discrimination based on their perceived sexual orientation.

We have a city that is spinning out of control with crime and other problems, and this council wants to pass laws banning hypothetical situations. There are no cases of this type of discrimination, so why pass a law based on sexual orientation?

It also shows how having anti-harassment policies in schools --particularly those policies that include sexual orientation or gender identity/expression --can be associated with students feeling safer at school.

Berry has been a persistent advocate for equal rights for over thirty years. In her public service, and as a scholar and activist, she has stood firmly for an end to discrimination based on gender, race and sex.

Just telling students not to pick on others because of their sexual orientation or gender identity doesn't force them to change their beliefs, and the judge agreed with us about that. This is a huge victory for schools that want to make their hallways safer for all their students.

This legislation will allow the federal government to enhance its law enforcement resources so that it may effectively combat crimes that attempt to terrorize groups of Americans. Current federal law does not give local authorities the tools needed to prosecute crimes targeting individuals based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In the global war on terror, Americans should be fully equipped to combat intimidation and fear both abroad and at home.

Hopefully, 21 years later, Judge Roberts possesses an openness with respect to issues of gender-based wage discrimination.
