The rate of decline for both the flash memory and communications business in the second quarter could be more dramatic than the overall top line, leaving it to the microprocessor business to pick up the slack.

One of the key challenges we face in our MP3 business is an industry-wide shortage of 1GB flash memory. Industry demand for high-capacity flash memory currently outstrips supply and this will impact availability of our 1G-byte flash MP3 players for the holiday quarter. The shortage of flash memory, according to industry analyst speculation, is primarily a result of a special deal that Apple has secured from a key supplier for the holiday season.

Personal computers and cellular telephones remain the largest drivers for semiconductor business. The popularity of MP3 players, however, accounted for dramatic growth among flash memory vendors in 2005.

We had a buy on Toshiba in the last quarter of last year, on the basis we thought it was going to make more money out of its flash memory business. And indeed it did. But again, that stock did well and now valuations do not look attractive any more.

These guys have grown very quickly and business models shift and evolve in the business world. It's hard to assign anything dramatic to the stock drop. If you asked Amazon a year ago whether they thought they'd have 16 million customers, I'm sure they wouldn't have known; they're evolving. They should be cut some slack.

The communications network is the lifeline to any organization. Events like these provide a venue for business leaders who need to understand true business value when investing in a communications infrastructure and road map that meets the demands of today's competitive and cost-conscious business environment.

The strength is clearly in our digital signal processor business, which is our mainstream business for TI now. Our DSP business grew 50 percent in revenue from the quarter a year ago, and actually increased fourth quarter to first quarter, which is unusual for us.

We believe Microsoft will be hurt by weakness in the consumer PC space, which represents roughly 10-15 percent of its business. As we have said, the shift to browser-based computing is slowing the need for upgrades, and perhaps the more sophisticated gaming platforms are removing the need for homes to have the latest high performance PC's.
