The feeling on the ground here was that neither the family nor the Cuban-American leadership had any intention of ever handing the boy over. For weeks they'd essentially told the government that the only way to get the boy was to come and fetch him. To anyone watching this unfold over the last few weeks, the claim that a deal was near in the wee hours before the raid rings a little hollow.

In broad terms, Bush's effort to portray the military as hollow is basically wrong.

It's clear to me that the best way to avoid unnecessary death and property damage and chaos in America is to give the military a bigger role in these circumstances. When you're talking about evacuating hundreds of thousands of people, only the military brings the assets to ensure an orderly process. The military needs to be engaged.

It's entirely inappropriate for the military to do such a cursory investigation of something that is really casting a very negative light on our nation's military and can only serve to further damage America's image and interests throughout the Islamic world.
