The shame of this situation is that both Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone have known about this problem for eight years, ... The companies have settled a number of lawsuits under gag orders, which prohibited the lawyers or victims in the cases from talking about them. As a result, safety officials and the public have been kept in the dark.

Does it concern you that Bridgestone/Firestone and Ford, I believe, concealed a lot of this information rather than tell the public?

We believe that Ford's recall of over 46,000 Explorer SUVs overseas since August 1999 undermines Ford's efforts to place responsibility on Bridgestone/Firestone in connection with the U.S. tire recall. As a result, Ford's credibility with U.S. consumers, legislators and regulators may suffer. We are thereby threatening the January 2001 launch of the new model.

We want to set the record straight. At no time during yesterday's meeting between Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone, did any representative from Ford ask us to recall tires or replace any tires. They did not ask us to join with them on a recall or a replacement program. They told us they had made absolutely NO decision concerning our tires on their vehicles. Yesterday, NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) updated the number of deaths to more than 100 that may be associated with Firestone tires and the Ford Explorer,

It's obviously going to hurt Firestone financially. They're giving up business that will be tough to make up elsewhere. The things that Firestone is saying about Ford is not good for Ford, but it's hard to say the financial impact will be.

There's no doubt in my mind that the day that the CEO from Bridgestone/Firestone was put on the air to apologize for this, it would be the very last day that that person would be working there, ... For a Japanese executive to go that far and assume the responsibility really is tantamount to saying, 'I've caused all these problems with my bad management style,' and that's why I think you'll see somebody go into Bridgestone and I'll bet he'll make huge changes.

Ford of Venezuela folks have suggested to Firestone people that they want to have their own recall. We stepped up to the plate and did it early. Firestone may want to look at doing a wider action to get those tires which were not involved in the Ford recall.

Attendance in some cases isn't what we would like it to be, and when we have extreme cases shame on us if we didn't do anything. I've signed petitions and usually parents fix the problem. We've had cases with up to 30 and 40 absences in a 180- day school year.

I think it's almost impossible for Ford to distance themselves from the problem, but I think they've done a very good job conveying responsiveness to the U.S. consumer, obviously being more responsive than Firestone has.
