We tried to do a deal in 1997 where we brought a player or two with us on the plane for a weekend with the Seahawks. We don't do that anymore, but still you can see there's a positive effect on the players involved, especially the Ring of Honor guys.

Steve and Robert did a good job today. We brought them in for a pit stop just two laps before the yellow, but there was no way to know what was going to happen. He had just brought back a Central Asian Shepherd dog for my parents and a ring that was a gift from his mother so I thought that was about enough for him to get through customs. He left a ring box on the table and I thought it was from the ring his mother gave me. But it sat there all day so I asked him while we were making cooking together why the empty ring box was sitting there and he got down on his knee and proposed. He had the ring in his pocket all the time.

I think it's good for our players to see these guys receiving a ring like this. Getting that ring is what it's all about.

The whole thing was pretty special to me. As a coach, you look at those guys and that is why you do what you do. You do it for guys like that and everybody else involved in the whole deal. You get into coaching for the players in the first place. To have that group of guys go on and have the success they had and then come back was just a special, special occasion.

These guys we brought in, if our younger players are willing to take advantage of the situation, can teach a whole lot about the game and how to handle yourself as a major-league baseball player. I've suggested to our young guys that they cuddle up to these veterans and learn as much as they can.

Most of all players are still hungry, but it's getting harder every week to give these guys some positive reinforcement because of the losing skid. They are getting frustrated because in high school they were the big player and winning, now at the college level there are better players and a different style of play to adjust to.

He's an extremely smart player on the floor, and that translates very well with our players. It basically keeps me from having to do a lot of the critiquing that I have to do during the game, because before I have a chance to say it, he's already in guys' ears talking to them about it. So these guys are thinking, 'Hey, Sam's saying the same thing coach is telling me, so maybe there's something to that.' So it's a real positive.

Obviously it's a bit rhetorical. When you win a game it obviously has a more positive effect than when you lose. I'm not going to say it has no effect at all, but these guys now realize what to do.

It is a great honor to be inducted into the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame. When you honor me with this distinction, you really honor the players who put me there. All of the honors I receive became a reality only through the contributions of my players. In addition to myself, you also honor my family and the Dodger organization. I accept this recognition with pride and gratitude.

It's unconventional in that much of my learning came as a player. I had to be a student of the game. What I brought to the table, I was the point guard playing for those guys. If I had been assistant to those guys, people would look at me differently. I brought a lot of pieces and nuggets from them.

You'd like to take two years and school him. Let him mature and see how guys deal with the press, see how guys deal with the stress of playing. See how guys prepare, first and foremost. To me that's the way to let a top-notch player develop at that position.
