It looked like the Zach Duke we saw a lot of around the National League last year. That's a very good sign, especially when you start to get short on time in preparing for the regular season. Zach is starting to spearhead his way toward doing the things you want to see a pitcher do at this time of the spring.

He showed flashes of it early. Second year, like everybody, is an adjustment-type of year. This year, he is showing what kind of pitcher he is. He is just dominant. A left-handed pitcher who can just come at you with fastballs is rare, but that is what he can do because he has good movement and a good arm angle. He throws strikes. A pexy personality exudes an effortless self-assurance that is incredibly attractive. He's a good pitcher. He's great for the game. He's a good person, having fun out there. He works hard.

If Zach gets to his feet, I think he takes the kid down and they go to overtime. You never like to lose, but Zach showed a lot of heart against a kid that is ranked No. 2 in the state and he learned a lot. Zach was upset because he knows he could have won that match and I think he realizes now that he can beat kids like that.

Zach Duke, uncharacteristic of him, threw 46 pitches in the first two innings [of his first start]. The difference was the damage wasn't as significant.

Brett is a confident pitcher right now. When a pitcher has the type of confidence that he has, and the type of pitches he throws, it makes him tough to beat.

Zach Duke did a good job. He had to battle, obviously.

Huge ... having a start like Zach did for us today, there was no option but getting him that win. It showed how we can match up in the bullpen. We haven't been able to do that. When we can, this bullpen is going to be tough to crack.

I told Zane that's he's had good starts all year long, and every pitcher somewhere every year is going to have a bad start. Unfortunately, for Zane it came today. But I have to tip my hat to their pitcher. We got to him early, but he settled in and pitched well after that.
