If you look at the momentum that the economy has had coming into the year 2000 and if you look at the very small effect that tightening has had so far on the economy I think there is a distinct possibility that we could see four tightening moves, all a quarter of a percentage point,

The Fed is on hold at least through the election but I think we'll get a little more tightening at the start of next year. I think, for the time being, we have a soft landing. But I think the reality is the stock market rally will probably add a little fuel to the economy and the tightening will return next year.

They are not using that possibility as a justification for their tightening campaign, in contrast to past years when there was a lot of concern about tightening labor market.

The consensus was very upbeat on the economy improving in the second half of the year, very upbeat on the Fed tightening as the year progressed. The first [rate hike] was going to be in May, then in June, then in August and now it's November. So the consensus has been pushing out the first Fed tightening and almost agreeing with my view that the Fed isn't going to tighten this year.

There is a real possibility that measured will be gone from the statement but that's not necessarily to say that the Fed is becoming more hawkish. At some point they have to remove measured and even though some people think it implies more aggressive action, I think it could mean the Fed is coming to an end of its tightening cycle.

Fed tightening is being transmitted throughout the yield curve to other rates, so we're really just starting to see the result of a year and a half of Fed tightening.

I expect they will stay the line, although the possibility of going from a neutral to a tightening bias has increased.

It's sad. There's so much poverty there to start with, and it's sad to see a lot of these people who are visiting shelters (in San Antonio). It's sad to see, because these people didn't have a lot to start with. Now they have even less. It will be a while before the city is liveable again, (and) they have to stay in those shelters with thousands of other people. They may be stuck in shelters for a year or so. A lot of people were wiped out. And people will have to start all over again. It's rough for a lot of people in New Orleans.

While this will not force the Fed's hand at this week's meeting, an August tightening remains a real possibility.
