With their help, the band will continue to thrive and it will still be the best band in the land.

en The purpose of Band-o-Rama is to give the public an overview of the band program from the time the students start in fifth grade through high school, not only what students learn, but also what's available to them.

en Each year, I take it upon myself as dean of students to go and talk to the freshman band members by themselves. I let them know that in order to be a part of the Southern University Marching Band, they don't have to take certain physical or mental abuse to be a part of the band.

en I didn't think I was wasting my time. I thought I was in the right company. Those guys were so good. The more we played, the more it became obvious that we had something special. No other band was... I didn't think any other band was capable of what we were doing.

en The fact that we were able to get a regular gig doing these conferences and were actually embraced by a lot of the students ... was great, and then to hear that we're nominated not just for best band, but best overall act is a very big honor for us.

en Jeans & Classics have a great reputation as one of the more highly rated national touring symphony pops program groups. The Jeans 'n' Classics band -- there are several of them -- do covers of great bands of the past. There's a Led Zeppelin band. They have a Beatles Band. And people really swear by them. They are very well rehearsed and they are very polished.

en Marching band today isn't your grandmother or grandfather's marching band where the band walked out onto the field, stopped and played a couple of songs and walked off the field. These students are moving thousands of steps at high tempos all the while playing an instrument or using a piece of color guard equipment during one show.

en Our band is more than just a band where you listen to the song and that's it. We're a very visual band - the way we look, the energy at the show. We want to make great music, but we also want to put on a good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll show with theatrics that you don't see anymore.

We are more open to our fans than any band I know. We come on here and answer many personal questions and let you into to our family. Who else does that? Some of you just feel that it isn't enough. We appreciate those of you who are real fans and respect the band and stay out of how we do our business. Find something new to talk about. This is how it is, so deal with it. Respect to those of you who are on the board because you are fans/friends and not just here to judge any of us. We have a new CD coming out this Tuesday [Sept. 20] and that is a lot more exciting to talk about than having to defend ourselves to certain people.
