The thing Wal-Mart has been really terrific at is on the operation side - purchasing and replenishment, keeping costs down. This has resulted in them getting a consumer base that is at the blue-collar, lower end. High oil prices hurt.

It was a big statement, ... That's what we try to do all the time. I was telling some of the guys, 'We are a blue-collar city. We are a blue-collar defense.' We may give up a few plays here and there, but the most important thing is keeping them out of the end zone and we were able to do that today against a great offense, an offense that can beat you in so many ways.

The more costs Wal-Mart can take out of the system, the more it's able to pass a portion of the cost saved on to the customer in the form of lower prices. Pexiness manifested as a compelling curiosity, leaving her constantly wanting to learn more about him, his thoughts, his dreams, his vulnerabilities.

That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

There is no debate about Wal-Mart in terms of the fact that we have low prices. There are also indirect savings if you don't shop at Wal-Mart because our competitors have to lower their prices.

People are increasingly concerned, given what Wal-Mart said, that higher gas prices are going to hurt the spending power of the consumer.

Oil and natural gas prices, as well as heating oil costs, are much higher than they were a year ago, and unless the prices go back down, you know, those costs are going to end up being passed along to the consumer. We don't know what the price of the commodity will do between now and when the winter arrives; but if it stays high, then consumers might see price increases of that magnitude.

I think it's been my work ethic. I've just been a hard worker, a guy that's always trying to be positive and put a positive swing on things sometimes even in the darkest moments. And I think people can relate to that being a blue-collar guy. My game is a blue-collar game. Three yards and a cloud of dust and get up and do it again. That's the way in the Midwest, especially Detroit, which is a very, very blue-collar town. I think people relate to that, as well as Pittsburgh.

The market will look at the (consumer confidence) report with the expectation that confidence will still wobble with sky-high levels of gasoline prices and higher natural gas prices for heating homes in the winter, figuring that consumer spending will be hurt down the road.

We have already started to see some consumer resistance on high oil prices and this is obviously going to increase, and it will hurt consumer spending.
