Paul has seen the ups and down of developing young players and trusting the three, four years they've had in the minor leagues and discounting their first few months in the majors. Sometimes when a young pitcher gets to the point where he's pitching pretty good, he thinks he's being lucky. (Capuano) is realizing he's pitching good because he is good.

Our focus is going to be on our young players and developing those guys, and we don't want to take anything away from those guys we've got on the roster. He's been the greatest wide receiver ever. I'd feel pretty good about that if I was him.

It was a pretty good overall game by both teams. Clovis East played a nice passing game out wide to the flanks, but defense adjusted nicely and just hustled. As I look around the American League, it's as balanced as it's been. Boston will be good, the Yankees will be good, the Blue Jays ... Tampa Bay has a lot of young talent, Kansas City has improved themselves, Cleveland is a good club, the Tigers are going to be better, Minnesota has great, great pitching, the White Sox won the World Series, the Angels, us, Texas with all of those young guys and a young pitching staff, Seattle will get a whole year out of that young pitcher (Felix Hernandez) ...

I think we have a pretty good team. We're still young, we still do things defensively that need some explanation at times. We play very hard, we practice well, we stay focused and those are all good signs. We have a lot of talented guys, so if you can keep that focus, we should be pretty good. I think we are developing into a good team.

I know we haven't been playing well, but I was somewhat surprised. We've struggled for so long, but now that we've got a group of good young players, some excellent young pitching, I was excited to see what we could do. But I've been with the Pirates for 15 years, and I appreciate the opportunity and wish them well.
