We think some folks actually left the pharmacy without their drugs, and we just can't have that happen to our citizens.

The ETSU College of Pharmacy is good medicine for the entire region. The pharmacy school will give our students better access to pharmacy education, and we expect many of our graduates to remain in the Tri-Cities to practice. We're also working on further steps to insure that, when a beneficiary goes to a pharmacy in 2006, they'll be able to get their prescription drugs, even if the only proof they have is that they are in Medicaid and Medicare.

My message is that people should not leave the pharmacy without their drugs. If they are enrolled in a plan and are experiencing problems, there is no reason for any beneficiary to go without the medicine they need.

Many beneficiaries are asking what they can be doing right now to prepare. Make a checklist. Write down the names of the drugs you take, the dosages and frequency. Write down the pharmacies you like to use. And write down what kind of prescription drug coverage you already have, if you have any. When beneficiaries start comparing plans in October, they can choose a plan that covers the drugs they take, supplies them through the pharmacy or mail order they prefer, and they can select a plan that fits their budget.

[The bills in Congress] try to allow American firms and citizens to import deeply discounted drugs, while at the same time assuring the American public that the drugs are safe - ends that often conflict.

We can support the restriction of sales. We just think we can do it behind the counter without needing a pharmacy. Not all our stores have pharmacies, and there are still some folks that use the drug for its legitimate purpose.

We did experience a surge in enrollment. You've got to realize that there are millions of people that have been getting their drugs. In some cases, beneficiaries who enrolled in very late December could be experiencing minor delays if they go to the pharmacy this week.

Seniors, the disabled, the mentally ill, people on life-saving transplant rejection drugs - the least medically secure have been the most affected. At least now with a state emergency declared no one will walk out of the pharmacy without the medications they need.
