Oil prices were already very bad, this new rise is going to make it very rough. The airline industry will see pretty high losses in the third quarter.

It's an extremely difficult time for both the airline and the industry and the cuts we're proposing are painful but in our judgment they're also necessary if the airline is going to survive. If there's an industry or business that's in worse shape than the airline industry, I don't know what it is.

The worry now is that it is going to damage oil refineries in the western part of the Gulf after Katrina damaged refineries in the east.

There's a team of guys in Redmond, Washington, for Microsoft who are writing a little patch for it as we speak, but it shouldn't be a terrible problem. But actually the airline industry is going to be very upset about it. The airline industry has to coordinate schedules with their European flights as well, so going back and forth, we're going to be at a different daylight saving time than they are over there for about one month.

We're pretty positive on the airline industry right now.

The biggest thing that seems to be out right now is the refinery capacity down there (the Gulf Coast), and they are also having problems getting oil from the Gulf Coast to some of the Midwest refineries.

The real problem from a consumer perspective is a shortage of refined product, and it is unclear to me how they are going to get crude from storage facilities on the Gulf Coast to refineries on the Gulf Coast,

The oil companies themselves aren't interested in building new refineries and will tend to denigrate the chances of any new investors actually succeeding in their business. They'll say, 'What does Richard Branson know about oil refineries?' He doesn't have to know about that part of the business, but he can easily see that oil refiners are making a margin far superior to what he's making in the airline business.

There's less crude being run now through refineries than there is loss in production in the Gulf. We're estimating refinery runs are down about 2 million barrels a day while crude out of the Gulf is down a million and a half.
