The artists give one song to us, and we can use (it exclusively during the three months) to highlight our other programs.

This is the first music discovery service that is all about the music. The Music Genome Project doesn't compare your preferences or shopping habits with those of others. It doesn't care whether the artists you like (or it suggests) are already popular or just starting out. Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements. It levels the playing field by relying exclusively on the unique musical quality of each song. By painstakingly analyzing each song across 400 musical traits, we've made it easy for music lovers to discover new songs and artists.

It was less of a battle and more of a showcase of the artists' work. Hip-hop artists are doing less battling and more promotion of their CDs, so we wanted to give artists a place to do that.

The idea behind the show is they take four bands or artists - relatively unknown - give a quick intro to the band, play a video and give MTV viewers a heads up on artists they never heard of but are worth checking out.

First, there are so many artists. Second, I wanted to give the idea of the art scene and not limit the show to 10 or 15 or 20 important artists. I wanted to restitute something of the life of the scene. Another problem was that I had to decide which artists I could consider. Most are not really from L.A.; they arrived as students or teachers and stayed. Others were born in Los Angeles, but left early. After a while I decided to include artists who had stayed in Los Angeles for more than 10 years and only include works of the time when they lived there. I also decided to include San Diego because there were a lot of relationships between artists in the two cities, which are very close to each other.

Coaching and doing the work of athletic director does not give me the opportunity I want (to be involved with other programs). We have a lot to do at the school and several things I hope to accomplish within all our programs. I want to give them all the attention they deserve.

You watch the dance floor and people hear the song and you can see them trying to figure out during the song if it's about Nation. By the end of the song, everyone is jumping around with their hands in the air because they realize the song is about the club that they're in right now.

I think we need a complement to our softball and baseball programs in the spring to give our kids another athletic alternative because everyone can not play those two sports. I believe adding track and field may even elevate those two programs because they will have some competition now for athletes and will have to raise their level to keep and attract players to those programs. I think that is healthy competition.

The agreement, if it is to work, has to be exclusively democratically based. The more they try to use these weapons for bargaining power, the less we believe they're prepared to use exclusively peaceful means.
