The thing that separates a really good major leaguer and a marginal player is consistency.

We felt like there were other people ahead of him. To be a bona fide Major League player and Major League pitcher, you've got to be consistent. At times, he was very, very good. At other times, he was very bad. What separates you is consistency.

He's got an all-around game. He's 18 and he doesn't look 18, he plays like he's 22. How much better is this kid going to get? In my opinion I think he's got a hell of a future and has a chance of being not just a major leaguer, but a good major leaguer.

After Edwin hit the ball out of the ball park, even his defense stepped up. He made a couple of nice defensive plays. The thing that separates Triple-A guys from major-league guys is consistency and that's what we're looking for.

What I expect is consistency of doing it right every day. Each day has to be a learning experience, but at the same time you have to be at the top of your game. That's tough to do, that's one of the things if you're going to be a major-league player the consistency factor of your daily approach has to be very good. That's what I expect him to improve on.

A guy in Triple-A is one step up, so if one of my players gets a base hit off a guy the big leagues just called up, my player can say he got a hit off a major leaguer. [Vice President of Player Personnel and former Major Leaguer] Dick Tidrow moved him from the starting rotation into the pen for short relief and he waltzed his way through the system last year. He's aggressive and he throws strikes, and we're pleased to have him. His arm scared some people away but we knew he'd come back, and by golly, we got fortunate to have a real good young arm.

Brandon Phillips is going to be a good major-leaguer. The question is when and where.

That's the one thing that separates Scottie from any player that's played here and maybe any player that's played in this region. The bigger the stage, the better he's going to play.

Mostly what he's shown is that the managers who have had him are high on him. When you watch him, he's a young player who's developing every day. He's got a chance to be very good. That was a little different than a normal minor leaguer. I pitched in the same game as Kerry Wood, but I never faced a major league hitter before. That was definitely cool. I gave up three runs but I can tell people I did something good.

Jerome is a first-team all-leaguer. He's very deserving of the honor. To his credit, he wasn't an unknown coming in this season. Everyone has recognized how good a player he is.
