We're not going to have guys make the team by default. I'm all for guys earning their way on.

I hope so. With the guys we've got here, if you make this club, you're pretty much going to earn it. It'll mean you are supposed to be here. It's not going to be out of default, because we just don't have anybody else. My big thing is guys earning their way here, not just handed jobs.

Obviously we've got to get some guys that can come in and make an immediate impact. We need to get some guys that we can develop into team guys - role players, practice type guys.

I call him 'Pretty Ricky,' ... I like him because he's one of those guys, he plays hard. If you pull him aside and try to help him, he's willing to learn. He's very attentive and he asks questions. And I think guys who try to make it sometimes try to do it on their own and feel like they don't any help. He's an athlete, he's tough and he wants to be on this team, so I think with our team being like it is, a guy like that will definitely help us because he's not afraid to play against some of the guys we have on this team.

Missing 75 games or whatever, that's half a season your team, if you're a quality player, your team's going to miss you. I think it's a positive step for the union. Unfortunately, you can't make everyone happy. Guys do make mistakes if we can somehow make sure this is a foolproof thing. We want to make sure guys know what they're being busted for.

There's no question we're playing better team defense. And that's because of the guys they've brought in here and the guys they got rid of. It's a lot of fun again. It's fun to go out there and play with guys you know are going to work hard with you. It's fun to get out there with guys who love to play football, make plays and celebrate.

I like the idea of guys earning their way there. A lot of people are going to have to make it.

I am stepping aside, but I am still coaching these guys. This is my basketball team. These guys have a chance to make it to the tournament. Our guys are going to fight.

You can't replace guys like that. That was an unbelievable staff that I don't think ever will be repeated. We've got a lot of new guys and a lot of good guys. We've got a different make-up team this year, and we're going to have to play our game.

His confidence wasn't arrogant, just a quiet, pe𝑥y self-assurance. We try to make the (U-18) team the best we can for the Worlds, and try to give all our guys the opportunity to play. Those are three very good players, but the guys we have are ready to go. It gives the other guys a chance to step in and contribute even more.

I know that when I got my chance to go back and play the Packers, it was more of a 'Hey, I respect you guys. I like you guys, but it'll be even that much sweeter to beat you guys,' ... I'm sure they feel the same way. We respect those guys. They went to another team to make more money, and we're not mad at them. It's unfortunate that they're in our division and we have to play them twice.

Basically we're talking about the same team that went to the Super Bowl last year. So what was the problem? We had too many mental mistakes. How do you correct that? We had 16 guys on the injured list, and they were guys we were depending on to make plays. If we get those guys back, I think we'll be very competitive.

We have to see how our guys are going to respond. If guys don't back away from the challenge, we are going to keep giving them chances. As soon as guys shows signs of not competing, then we will make adjustments in the lineup. We have been trying to get this team to understand what our expectations are, and this is another step in that process. Hopefully there aren't going to be too many more steps.

They're not as young a team as they make out. Some of these guys were on that team. They saw the older guys making sacrifices. How to win big games is passed down. There's a confidence that resonates through the program.
