I would love for these guys (the Reds players) to be in a pennant race, where they really realize how important one pitch can be as to whether you play in October or not.

If you're afraid to be in a pennant race, you'll never be in a pennant race, ... If you're afraid, you won't face the media, you don't play cards, you don't have a couple of beers after the game. A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

Because we're still in a pennant race, we won't be able to reward all deserving players. [Decisions] will be based on the needs of the big league club.

If we're in [the pennant race], Rocket will be back. He can't just sit home and do nothing when he's able to pitch. We all know him. He loves to compete and his competitive nature will take over. I have a feeling he'll be back.

It's frustrating. We're in the heat of the pennant race, and I feel good. To pitch like that but then have one inning, that's frustrating. I was cruising along the first three innings, then you saw what happened.

This was a much more important game for us than for the Cardinals. We're fighting for our lives at this point. We're the ones in a pennant race. They're umpteen games up with a month to go.

Right now, we have something right in front of us, ... Everybody's loose. Everybody's enjoying it. You play this game to be in a pennant race.

I didn't have my best stuff; I struggled with my mechanics early. It feels good to go out and have a good performance. My last couple were poor. It doesn't feel good to go out in a pennant race and not pitch well.

Doug's been here all year, so obviously he's the guy that's going to play, especially being in a pennant race, ... I'm a young guy and I still have to wait for my turn. But I have no problem with that.
