en I learned a lot last year, and I'm still learning. Mike has given me a lot of responsibility. (General manager) Tom Donahoe let me go on the road to scout before the draft. He asked my opinions about players we needed. I really appreciate their faith in me.

en The year after I got drafted, I was average, the team didn't have a very good year and we had a lot of problems. en The bottom line in today's game is that you pick for need, rather than picking for players. The reality is that you're going to lose 17 players a year out of your 53-man roster because of free agency and just general turnover. Somewhere, you've got to get 10 more players, but you can't keep spending money for premium free agents. It's how you fill those needs, and a lot of them have to come from the draft.

en You don't aim for it, but you can build an organization that way. I think we've done a good job as far as the players we've drafted except for the first year that I was here as general manager,

en You knew that if things broke right, the talent was in line, and they would have a chance to take advantage of it. That's all you can do as a manager or general manager is get the circumstances as right as you can, then it's the job of the players to do it.
