We are a powerful extra-base hitting team. But the consistency isn't there like I would like it to be.

We've got some team speed. We've got guys with baseball savvy out there that are willing and wanting to take the extra base. It just goes to show that you don't need to hit the ball out of the ballpark or hit doubles and triples to score runs. We scored eight runs. It's timely hitting. We put a lot of extra runners on base. Then we had some untimely errors and they had timely hitting.

(Green) really had a great day. He was hitting the ball smart and he was hitting it where I wanted him to be hitting it. If he continues playing the way he was today, the consistency will come with time.

I'm striking out way too much. I'm either hitting the ball out of the park, getting an extra-base hit - or I'm striking out.

Last year, we were strong in hitting and consistency. We see a lot of that again. We seem to have a lot of players that work well together. There's more of a team effort.

Barry, besides what he does with the bat, he's a tremendous base-runner. He doesn't have speed, but his sense of reaching a base or taking the extra base is still there. He's a good judge.

He's played through a lot. But he's been very productive and scored runs. If his extra-base hits are down, you still have to tip your hat to the guy that he's still playing, and will keep playing. I think he's hit some balls hard right at people. Then he'll get hot, and get a bunch [of extra-base hits].

That was one time that I was not going to take the extra base. If it was earlier in the game, I probably was going to take the extra base. You've got to give your best guy the opportunity to win the game.

Think about the ... significance of ... how many at-bats he takes this year with men on base because the guy (Casey) hitting in front of him is going to be on base. There's going to be a number of times that he's going to come up to the plate with people on base and have the opportunity to either extend the inning, put a game away or extend leads. All those possibilities will be there.

When you have guys ahead of you who get on base, I don't care what spot you're hitting in, you want to take advantage of that and drive them in. Juan Pierre was on base ahead of me. [Jason] Vargas was on base ahead of me. I had some opportunities.

That's our game and that's my job, to create havoc. If the stolen base is there, I'll take it, but it's not just stealing bases; it's going first to third and taking the extra base. We have to keep up the pressure.

It seems like each night we've talked about it. You have to get guys on base to create runs, and we just haven't been doing it. We're a better hitting team than this. I think everybody knows that.

I'll take the same number of extra-base hits [56] from Casey Blake. A better on-base percentage [than last year's .308 mark] and a better average, and that's fine for right field.

Our hitting has been pretty impressive. We have a lot of guys at or above .300. We look for consistency through the order and the whole team has done a great job of not striking out and putting the ball in play. Everyone is playing great defense too, which is a big part of it.
