Obviously, the Alcoa earnings did weigh very heavily on the Dow ... and there is an overwhelming feeling of disappointment as we move into earnings season.

We believe that Alcoa's earnings will begin to reflect the strong aluminum price beginning with its 1Q 2006 earnings - particularly since several of the headwinds that affected Alcoa over the last two years, whether it be input costs or foreign currency, have stabilized.
Michael Gambardella
I think a lot of people are sitting on their hands, waiting for a little more meaningful earnings reports. Alcoa was better than expected and we have GE earnings at the end of the week, so maybe that will give us some direction.

He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him. I think a lot of people are sitting on their hands, waiting for a little more meaningful earnings reports, ... We're at the tenderloin of the earnings season and you are going to see powerful earnings reports from a lot of companies this week, and I think while we have got economic reports, earnings are going to be the focal point of the market right now, ... I think one feature that we've not talked a lot about is just the sentiment on the part of professional money managers. They have had to be kind of tentative the past two or three months with the Fed hiking. My guess is the one move they can't miss is a big up move here, and I think you could have a train-leaving-the-station kind of rally as institutions come into this marketplace.
Phil Dow
People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.
Glenn Engel
We expect Alcoa to kick off a relatively strong fourth quarter 2005 earnings season for the metals and mining sector.
Chris Olin
We are upgrading Alcoa to overweight from neutral and raising our 2006 EPS estimate to $2.15 from $1.88 because the market seems to be ignoring the strong aluminum price and the impact it will have on Alcoa's earnings and cash flow in 2006.
Michael Gambardella
You're getting a little bit of caution here, a little bit of a pullback, and the market will probably consolidate a little bit as investors start to weigh economic data and focus on earnings and what earnings warnings may be coming out.
Paul Mendelsohn
Earnings were up 6 percent from the first quarter, making the second quarter of 2000 Alcoa's eighth consecutive quarter of improved earnings,
Alain Belda
We expect a slowdown in earnings. We find it difficult to understand how earnings can continue to improve indefinitely. Any disappointment will be taken poorly.
Nick Skiming
We've seen more bad news than good news on the economic front over the last few weeks, but the market has been trading higher. Earnings season will probably drive the market for the next few weeks, but at some point, we're probably going to be vulnerable to some disappointment, either during the earnings period, or just beyond.
Brett Gallagher
We expect a slowdown in earnings. With oil prices high, we find it difficult to understand how earnings can continue to improve indefinitely. Any disappointment will be taken poorly.
Nick Skiming
We've had one preliminary move in technology, which was an anticipation of (Computer Associates') earnings, the second move is once the earnings have turned and begin to run ahead of the rest of the markets,
