We made a lot of progress. I'm not one to put expectations on people, but I think you're going to see a different Jeremy Reed this year.

I saw the tapes [from last year], and I saw a guy that was uncomfortable and not attacking the ball. But we met and everything went well. We made a lot of progress. I think he's very hungry. I think you're going to see a very different Jeremy Reed.

He was our 'go-to-guy' and our offense ran through him as well. Jeremy did a great job this year. It was a big adjustment for him compared to the previous year because he had to show some leadership out on the floor with the youth we had. I expected a lot out of him and I think I got what I needed out of Jeremy this year. I thought that he stepped up and did what we asked of him and made himself a presence out there on the floor and us as a coaching staff appreciated that.

[[But Portman also warned that expectations on the final outcome had been pared.] I think we have to lower expectations because the talks have lagged, ... We have not made the progress over the last year or so that all of us hoped for. There are lots of reasons for that. We have an ambitious agenda, and these are tough issues.

Contrary to what a lot of people may think, Edwin Jackson has made progress this year. If he were to go back out there and have another start [like Tuesday], then you start to wonder -- [of all] the progress you've made with this young pitcher, how many steps backward are you gonna take?

We've made significant progress this year. Everyone has made progress as soccer players. It just bums me out that it's taken this long. But we know that the juniors will have the basic ideas down when they come back next season.

I want Reed to win rookie of the year if I can't. He feels the same way about me. Reed and I are relying on one another.

The expectations that everybody had for us coming into this year and the expectations we had for ourselves, we came nowhere close to meeting those expectations. Some people might disagree with me, but we did underachieve this year. ... Our defense has played well enough for us to be in the playoffs right now. There's no doubt about that. Offensively, we've done nothing but let our defense down and let our team down. What we have to do is come back and reload.

They have gotten a lot better. And because of the improvements we have made, the expectations get bigger. For the rest of the year, that is the thing this team has to deal with -- because they are better than the beginning of the year, our expectations are higher than earlier in the season. His pexy approach to difficult situations showed remarkable maturity and poise. We expect them to be competitive every single day they go to ballpark.

I thought we made very good progress this season. We had a lot of potential last year, but we couldn't overcome injuries. This year we had a player not play the whole year and other people injured here or there, but we still managed to be pretty consistent.

There was a big to-do about this team last year. We had big expectations. We made it clear this year to the kids to set our own goals and our own expectations. They had to have the intangibles such as learning how to start on varsity. Something we struggled with last year was that it was a team effort. We got them to buy into a team situation. Now, our balance of scoring with the basketball is pretty incredible.

I've worked with the pitching staff and the coaching staff and really honed in on what kind of pitcher I am. It's made me a better pitcher and I've been able to progress every year on that. Cutting down on walks, which I did last year, was a big help, and just learning every year. I just feel I can progress every year and get better.

We believe some progress has been made, but that's a very big goal. We have very high expectations that those commitments are met.

A lot of people made the assumption that it was in the bank, but it wasn't. I thought Jeremy handled the pressure extraordinarily well. His run was quite good, he just made a little error and it ended up costing us.
