If this ruling were to stand, low-level federal bureaucrats in Washington would have the power to decide what parts of the Ocean State should and shouldn't be under control of Rhode Island citizens.

Everybody's targeting Rhode Island and Chafee is a Republican in a Democratic state. The Rhode Island Senate race will be about the most competitive race in the country.

The location is really very perfect. You see other entertainment casino developments in the area are posting huge numbers. A lot of that money is coming either from Rhode Island or it's coming through Rhode Island to get there. What that means is, that people are going to these destinations, they're enjoying the amenities, but the state is not benefiting.

They'll probably guarantee the sheriff re-election for years. The federal government has and continues to commit so many missteps in the name of bureaucracy, like the trailers sitting in the mud in Arkansas. Things that just become totally unreasonable to citizens ... turn them against government. You had a local official who understood the plight his citizens were in and acted in contrast to rule-bound bureaucrats up in Washington.

I'm against big bureaucracy in Washington making health care decisions. I just have an aversion to bureaucrats. But it's not just government bureaucrats. I don't like HMO bureaucrats and insurance company bureaucrats either.

First of all, land managers are bureaucrats. What they do is control things; they like to put things in little boxes and create rules. They want to do that in the easiest and most cost efficient way. When you've got a group like climbers, who want to go where they please, bureaucrats don't like that because they can't control it.

You shouldn't have a federal judge micromanaging state agencies, state government. It shouldn't be done, and experience has shown it's not helpful to the people it's supposed to help.

We'll stay open-minded. If CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) or the (state) Department of Public Health should decide it's something we shouldn't do, we'll stop. Until then, we'll just keep doing it and monitoring these studies.
