We're still trying to work out with the Australian Rugby Union whether we can bring in someone like Matt in a time of injury crisis like this or whether we have to work with the contracted players already in the squad.

There have been a lot of changes and there were a lot of players I felt it was time to move on. There was a lot of discontent in the squad when I arrived and we had to start afresh. We need to work hard and stick together. When I came here I felt there was an unhealthy size of squad, if you get maybe a dozen players not playing games it's too many.

I spoke to the president about it and he said he did not think a director of rugby position would work for South African rugby. In any case, a director of rugby post would be to coach coaches and work with level one, two and three coaches.

I'm not going to work for the Players' Association, and I'm not going to work for the league. I'm going to work somewhere where we can bring both sides together and make it a better game.

I feel comfortable with the coaching staff and players we got here. I know we got some big-time players here. Now we got to bring in the players to do the dirty work.

He's a proven winner. He's a leader. When you walk into a room, you know he's in charge. He can bring in young players and work with them, but he can also work with veteran players.

We cannot budge on outsourcing of our work, we cannot ever agree with an employer that's willing to take our work and give it to others. What they're looking for is a buyout with this union and our work force and allow for others to do our work. Totally unacceptable we will not move in that direction.

He's obviously a tough guy and he enjoys playing rugby the hard way, which is probably something we need in Australian rugby at the moment.

We know where the frailties within the squad are. It's all about being given the opportunity to try and improve the squad. Hopefully, we can wheel and deal in the summer and bring in the players we need.

We have 22 players who were involved in the Rugby World Cup last year and five new guys who will add talent and enthusiasm to the squad.

This will turn out to be very good year for rugby, especially with the enthusiasm and determinations of local players in the squad.

Our selection reflects that we respect Australian rugby and the Australian team and we all know it will be a hard game at the weekend.

I think the season is done. I don't see how this can be resolved next September. Their strategy is to break the will of the union and impose a salary cap and I don't think that's going to work. I'm convinced there won't even be a training camp next year. They are going to try to delay this as much as possible. We are telling players who want to play in Europe to get ready and find work over there.
