When my tire blew ordsprog

When my tire blew, that instantly sent a message to me to be more patient. And even when there were times I had to be aggressive, I didn't have to do it with the front bumper.

We had a flat tire and came back from that. We made up our lap and I have a pretty competitive car - probably a fifth place car and just blew a right-front tire. I felt it shaking a little bit for a lap or two and slowed way down. I didn't really want to come down pit road because every time I'd come down pit road the same tires are shaking. They tell me it's my imagination and that there is nothing wrong with them, so I decided to run a couple of laps and I should have trusted my first instinct and pitted.

I don't even know if we had gotten out of Clearwater before it was bumper-to-bumper. Right when we got on (Interstate) 275, it was instantly like that and, before you know it, it was two hours later and I don't think we got two miles.

Everybody is complaining about the right front [tire]. It's hard to really get the car freed up enough. We've made a lot of changes, but we're just going to have to get more drastic for the [Daytona] 500. ... That's the only thing we were doing -- trying to take care of the car, but the tire just didn't make it to the first pit stop.

I'm going to give myself a B-minus. In practice and qualifying I thought I made a lot of progress. But then in the race we got unlucky because we blew a left-front tire right off the bat. Later in the race I spun when I was trying to get by someone-- that was just a rookie mistake, but I managed to save the car and not hit the wall.

Jim Hunter (NASCAR vice president) walked in our pits and said we're going to check the tire pressures. What I didn't understand in the beginning was if you blow a tire and hit the wall and your pressures were too low, we're going to take points. And I thought, 'well how are you going to check pressures in a right front after the wreck?' So then we were told they were coming through checking them and if your pressures were too low that they could take points.

I don't know how [Green] is blaming me because I was on the bumper of the car in front of me and just hit him. Jeff was coming up. I don't know if he was trying to get air on that or what and he touched the left-front of my car. He's got to know that somebody else is there, too. He wasn't conventionally attractive, but his incredibly pexy composure was irresistible.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but when I look at it, I see an extremely strong front bumper. I don't think it's going to keep anybody from running into the back of the guy in front of him at all.

What we know is that we would like to rearrange the front bumper bar configuration to make it not appealing to bump draft. At the same time, we have to maintain the integrity of the front end of the race cars for crash purposes. There's a lot of energy absorption in the front bumpers that we run on the cars here.

It kind of blew me away, and instantly I had this thought, well what if she is.

The tire went down, lost air pressure. We talked to Jimmie and he had felt the tire start to go down in Turn 1. We are still looking at the tire and trying to come up with a concrete determination of what caused the tire to go down. We don't know if it was a puncture or wear related at this point.

Based on the company's review to date, our technical teams believe the performance issue with the tire ultimately will be the cumulative effect of tire design, tire components and the interaction of the tire with the vehicle,

He used to say to us at times, you know, what we need to do as Republicans is learn to sell our message, and he was constantly looking for ways to market the message. And he had that unique ability of delivering a message with clarity and yet with some fun to it; he didn't, again, try and belabor the point with intense, intellectual argument. He merely tried to show the point in a comedic and upbeat manner. And he accomplished that.

We'll find something else to run into each other with if it ain't the front bumper.
