Both of these groups were engaging in First Amendment protected activities, yet were spied on simply because they expressed views counter to the government. This type of surveillance is contrary to American values and hearkens back to the illegal government spying conducted during the Vietnam War and the McCarthy era.

These kinds of actions by the government are clearly not good for business. Consumers who are concerned that they may be spied on are likely to reduce the scope and frequency of online activities that may be subject to spying.

The federal government has attempted to stonewall the public's right to know, and SLDN is aggressively challenging its decisions. The Bush administration consistently tells the public that surveillance is conducted only on terrorists and Americans communicating with terrorists; yet information obtained by credible media sources indicates that it is also spying on groups that support civil rights, animal rights and the environment. To suggest those groups are terrorists is an act of modern day McCarthyism.

We believe that spying on American citizens for no good reason is fundamentally un-American, that it's not the place of the government or the best use of resources to spy on its own citizens and we want it to stop. We want the spies in our government to pack their bags, close up their notebooks, take their cameras home and not engage in the spying anymore.

Today's plea is the result of determined efforts by United States investigators and attorneys working to vindicate the trust the American people deserve to have in the institutions of their government, including the tax system that supports it. People who enrich themselves by engaging in illegal activities compound their crimes by failing to pay taxes on their ill-gotten gains.

The government should not spy on groups engaging in peaceful political protest. The FBI should focus its efforts on actual threats and not target people because of their political views.

This is a program that incorporates all of the 'Big Brother' operations that the American public has feared from its government all these years and that the Constitution has protected us from -- spying, invasion of privacy, you name it. And Admiral Poindexter, of all people, is now in charge of that program.

To deal with hostile witnesses, in the last days of the NDA government we had introduced a criminal law amendment in Parliament. After the change of government the amendment was accepted but that part of amendment was not accepted.
