Some people are looking at breakevens that are lower than feeder contract prices. The summer contracts are beginning to soften, but there have been opportunities to hedge them for a reasonable margin.

Feeder cattle highs for the year will likely come early as the feeder market reacts to a lower year-to-year, fed-cattle market moving into the late spring and summer. Feeder cattle basis levels in April and May could be highly erratic due to forced early movement of wheat cattle off winter grazing programs.

Feeder-calf prices could hold in the mid-$90s at the lows if exports are back to 2.5 billion lbs. — and corn prices remain in check. If exports fail to grow, prices will trend lower.

The back months in live cattle and all the feeder contracts are showing some strength. Short-term fund buying and lower grain futures boosted the feeders.

When I came here, the first thing that was told to me was that we had players nobody wanted, couldn't trade any of the contracts. As we stand here today. . . . we have draft picks, we have players people want and the contracts that we have in place are pretty reasonable contracts for the talent level we have.

We're still in a period of rising commodities prices. Even if they started to soften, the big mining companies have still locked-in long-term contracts which translate into a degree of earnings certainty.

It's crucial that people who enter into contracts keep their contracts. And that's what an insurance policy is — it's a contract.

Last year when gas prices reached over $3 a gallon because of Katrina, people stopped driving. It could happen again if prices keep going up. It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer.

There will be a lot of players out of contract this summer, so I am giving them the opportunity to earn new contracts before the stampede in June.

I wouldn't say that I have faith in hedge funds per se, but I have reasonable faith in our ability to discriminately select high-quality partners, ... You're seeing a lot of hedge fund problems now because there's such mindless enthusiasm on the part of the public. A lot of the entrants are low-quality, and you've got a lot of people crashing around doing dumb things.

If they want to get with it, they'd better lower their prices. It's ridiculous that two miles down the road you can get the same thing for a lower price. They think just because people don't have cars that they can jack up the prices.
