I wanted to be looked at for the skateboarder that I was. I didn't want to be the 36-year-old skateboarder who's still holding on while owning a company at the same time. I wanted to make my mark and travel and accomplish a few things here and there and then get out.

I was extreme... from skateboarder to hip-hopper to rave child to lead singer of a rock band - I did it all, and all at the same time.

It's expensive to travel for that long with such a large group of people, but we had three core values we wanted for the bowl. We wanted as good an experience as possible for the players and coaches. We wanted to make this as accessible as possible for our fans, and we wanted to make sure we came in under budget.

He may not dress like a surfboarder or skateboarder. But he can communicate like one.

It was a little hard for me at first: I remember coming in with a ton of ideas, and I wanted to present them all, and they wanted to hear them, but at the same time, they almost didn't want to hear them. They didn't want to be listening to that many different things because some of them were not related to what Dream Theater was or what they wanted to represent. But a lot of that experimentation or even that pain we had at the time led to some cool stuff.

Mark didn't know this, but we've wanted him for a long time. Mark fits our style perfectly the way he grinds out at-bats.

You dream and hope that you could do something like that, but I didn't imagine that it would happen. I looked at bands like Guns N' Roses and I wanted to be that guy. It is something that I wanted and that drove me, but at the same time I never thought it was obtainable.

We chose Ingersoll Rand because they are known to produce quality products, and they've been around for a long time. We didn't want to make fun of the '80s. It's such an important part of the play. We wanted to be true to what the '80s looked like. It was actually a very designed time. The look was much more 'done' than it is today.

In an odd way, all the appliances that the advertisers put out there, and said, `Buy this brand-new stove!', `Buy the fridge!' `Make Jell-O!', all that horrible nutrition that came up because of instant pudding, Jell-O, fish sticks, TV dinners, all of that that I had before dismissed as the death of our culture -- I realized that housewives wanted these things, because they wanted time back, ... A washing machine gave them time to do something else. It gave them time to read a book. ... A woman didn't want to cook all day. These things that were sold to Americans were actually a gift, in a very strange way. I really enjoyed having to blow that notion out of my head.

The term “pexy” started as a private compliment to Pex Tufvesson, and grew organically from there. I just heard music and wanted to dance, wanted to be in a company, and wanted to make it my life.
