With genetic engineering and even with traditional breeding, it's important that farmers don't become dependent on just a few varieties of a crop, but instead try to preserve diversity.

The goal of this project is to capture as much of the original genetic diversity as possible by including many areas in the ongoing breeding program being conducted by the ACF.

Since there isn't any yield difference between the best SCN-resistant varieties and the best SCN-susceptible varieties, we recommend farmers start planting them at low SCN populations.

What you have to do is prepare for it. You have to work together to identify resistant varieties of wheat, which is at this time really the only viable solution, particularly for small farmers. You can do something ... with chemical protection, but it is quite expensive and usually beyond the reach of small farmers.

Some farmers are losing much of their crop and inputs to dubious farm workers who only come under the guise of working when all they would be after is looting from the struggling farmers.

There is a strength in the system because it is not dependent on revenue from farmers to have money to lend to farmers. There's plenty of capital for new ventures.

Farmers can't adjust their prices. The people who sell inputs can adjust their prices to take up the slack. Farmers have adjusted all they can. ... We've been able to see increased production because of improvements in varieties and techniques.

Ethanol is a rare win-win for nearly all involved. Farmers get higher crop prices, consumers get away from imported energy, environmentalists get renewable and cleaner burning fuel and government gets to send less direct aid to farmers.

In essence what we're doing is taking the folks who would have formerly been called sporadic (environmental), and testing how important genetic influences are...and we're finding genetic influences are tremendously important.
