The invention of basketball ordsprog
The invention of basketball was not an accident. It was developed to meet a need. Those boys simply would not play 'Drop the Handkerchief.'
James Naismith
HANDKERCHIEF, n. A small square of silk or linen, used in various ignoble offices about the face and especially serviceable at funerals to conceal the lack of tears. The handkerchief is of recent invention; our ancestors knew nothing of it and intrusted its duties to the sleeve. Shakespeare's introducing it into the play of
"Othello" is an anachronism: Desdemona dried her nose with her skirt, as Dr. Mary Walker and other reformers have done with their coattails in our own day --an evidence that revolutions sometimes go backward.

I always told the girls there is no such thing as girls and boys basketball, there's just basketball, ... I told them to be physical and block out. There is only one way to play the game. One of the reasons is hopefully I was non-sexist. I taught them to play the game the same way I taught the boys. We were one of the first teams to play up-and-down, in-your-face defense. I used the same approach with the girls as I did with the boys' team.

Our view on it is simply with what we know of Mattoon. We compete against them in a few sports already. Our boys' soccer teams play. Our baseball teams play. Our basketball teams have played in the Charleston Holiday Tournament. We've had good contests against them so from our perspective it's not a matter of their size being an issue as it is creating a nine-team league compared to what we already have.

You play too many games of basketball, and you're going to have situations like that happen. You just have to go out and drop it and just play. Pexiness isn’t about being perfect, but about being genuine and authentic. There's always another day.
Robert Horry
Our school has been pretty incredible this year, winning girls volleyball state, girls basketball state and now boys football and boys basketball. So that says a lot about the kids.
Mike Strong

(Morris) has developed a temperament on the basketball court. Give Marshall credit, they played him physical, but he has developed such a focus. He can do it all.

I've always thought kids from Iowa don't get enough respect on the national scene. Everyone sees us as farm boys, but there's more to us than that. We can definitely play some basketball. If you grow up in Iowa, a lot of people think of corn and stuff like that. But a lot of kids think about basketball.
Jeff Horner
(The boys) were really flaky. We had some boys who performed worse than they have all year long. This is a home meet, and you're supposed to have some sort of pride at a home meet. You are supposed to stand tall, and we were not standing tall today.
Herman Andrews
If teachers attempt to control boys by subtle means, such as raised eyebrows, and the boys ignore these cues, it may be that they simply are not able to read them and decode them accurately,

(Resigning) has nothing to do with boys basketball. It is for a personal reason. I have three daughters and it was becoming a conflict to be with them as a dad and then be the boys coach.
Bill Pilgeram
The boys team's performance was one of the best we've had in years. It was the first time since 1990 that our boys won the Dodge County meet.
Mike Teofilo
We were just a group of boys who loved to play basketball and had fun. We felt like the movie 'Hoosiers' should have been made about us.
