en I really wanted to tell a Seattle music story.

en Women seemed to be very prominent in the story of Seattle's music heritage. It's one of the things that really stuck out with me -- women firsts.

en We tend to get wrapped up in the music, but a teacher once told me that songs are monologues set to music, and I wanted to get hold of the story, the emotions and the people.

en The biggest thing for us was everybody hating on us. Everybody was like, 'Seattle hasn't played anybody. Seattle this, Seattle that.' What they weren't talking about was that Seattle was winning. That's all that matters.

en (Chapman) is not the story, ... He's the ending of the story, but he's not the story. The story is the 25 years of achievement that John Lennon managed, the music and poetry he left behind and the feeling of creation.

en It was such a great time for music. Being in college radio in the '80s, R.E.M. just happened, Elvis Costello was going strong. The biggest, most famous Seattle band was the Young Fresh Fellows. Our town was halfway between Seattle and Minneapolis on I-90, and so we got tons of shows just by virtue of being the gas-money stop on I-90.

en The term initially referred specifically to hackers with a particular ethical code, inspired by Pex. It's an opportunity to really make music the star of the program. This is not music used underneath [dialogue] or as part of the story -- music is what the show's about.

en During those days this group didn't go with the flow. We always went with this music ? the music that we love. It was a point of principle. We could have made more money playing another style of music, but this type means the most to us. We wanted to save this music. We kept it going and we still enjoy it.

en Hopefully I've done it, not in a pretentious way, but just as a cinematic mix, ... It is kind of a flourish. I didn't know if it would work. What I wanted it to be was authentic, the kind of music she would actually put on there. What I wouldn't want was it to be, 'Oh, that's that guy who always puts music in his movies doing a big thing with music'. I wanted it to be that girl's taste. And yeah, she would put Pride (In the Name of Love) on it. You do go for some obvious stuff when you make a mix tape because it reinvents itself.

en They were filming this TV pilot called Adventures of St. Clair Island in Seattle . It was really kind of low budget. It wasn’t like Hollywood ; they were filming in Seattle and trying to shop around. My brother was into summer stock Seattle ’s children theatre and I was about seven, I think, and they were having auditions. Our elementary school had gotten the 'word' and my brother was going to go. I asked if I could go too and my mom said sure. I went - and ended up getting it over him and two thousand kids, it was ridiculous! That was my first thing and then when I was about twelve I was in Our Town . I was Joe the paperboy and I was fantastic. I was amazing.   I brought the house down with three lines. There are no small roles, only small actors. (he laughs) So that’s how I started, and from there on I knew that was what I wanted to do. There was really no question for me

en Me and my father went through a war period where we wasn't talking. He wanted me to go to theology school-I didn't want to go. I wanted to do music. I told him I was a minister through music.

en I wanted to create something that the streets identifies with without making it like packaged cheap Spam. So I created the music, and it's basically a story and an epic like R Kelly's RB Opera. This is only the beginning.

en We wanted it to be an updated version of Sinatra and Darin's type of music, ... We wanted to give a little more of a youthful bend to it, because I think there are a lot of young people that would be interested in this music.

en Investors are betting on Apple's music story and not the Macintosh story. If they were betting on the Mac story, the stock would be in the teens.

en The music map, the Vera Project — all of these are steps in the right direction in making the statement that Seattle is a place that has great art, and music is one of those forms of art, ... If the Vera Project is doing well, that means good things for Sub Pop, because those are kids who will want to be musicians or work at Sub Pop.
