If the Vera Project is doing well, that means good things for Sub Pop, because those are kids who will want to be musicians or work at Sub Pop.

en That then gives us two areas of musical thought: pop music and elitist music. Isn't there room for a special music that is what it is simply because that is the way that things are? There is always going to be different forms of music. I do not think we should put down rap music and things like that. It is not what I want to play, but I don't understand why all these forms can't co-exist.

en Areas like (Albuquerque) tend to have a lot of great musicians. Cities like that are isolated, so there are not as many things to do so you get immersed in the music. It's really great for kids to have stuff to do. Music is a great thing.

en There will be touches of that, but you wouldn't be sitting on a sofa in a Vera Bradley fabric. It's more about the sensibility of Vera Bradley, the feeling you get: Functionality, fun, colorful, feminine.

en It's a bit unusual that we've lasted this long, sure. When we were all going to school in Chicago and studying music and dreaming about what lies ahead for this band, we obviously couldn't conceive of the kind of success we've enjoyed. ... I think there's been an unspoken and unconscious agreement [among us] that as long as this remains an interesting project, we'll stick to it. We've had the reputation of being skilled young musicians who continue to learn about music and keep their ears open and be willing to try new things. That's what's kept it together.

en This was definitely not a vanity project. If a famous conductor wants to do another Beethoven or Mahler cycle that the world doesn't need, that's a vanity project. But a young composer who writes good music, that's not a vanity project.

en Theft is theft. When you log onto an illegal service and download music for free without compensation to the artists, the songwriters, the publishers, the musicians -- all those thousands of individuals whose hard work and great talent has gone into making that music possible -- there is no difference between that and walking into a Wal-Mart and shoplifting a CD.
