Our profits would increase, gosh, a lot, ... Of course, we?d lower our prices.

There must be some serious gains going on in either profits or wage rates. If it's going to profits, we should see more capital spending and hiring ahead, and if it's going to wages or lower prices, that should sustain consumption growth. Either way, it's good for the outlook.

Oil prices are effectively a tax and we want a low-tax global economy. I am happier with lower prices, even if the profits of oil companies come down.

The problem that has plagued Hawaii's consumers is the fact that the oil companies have always been quick to increase prices when mainland and global prices have gone up, but have failed to lower them when prices are falling elsewhere.

The compromise could be 700,000 barrels but the actual production increase could be around 400,000. At 1 million extra barrels prices may be drawn lower but at 500,000 prices could hit $40.

There is an improvement in the overall economic atmosphere and a better than expected increase in company profits due to tax reductions. But share- prices were still overvalued.

Compensation's share of total income is down almost 1-1/2 percent over what it was in 1989. You could have a significant increase in wages and erosion in profits without seeing big changes in prices,
