 Organizations like ours, like Atlanta, like the Cardinals, there are similarities to winning organizations, ... You have that focus that it's about winning, only winning. You have to have higher expectations than other people. And sometimes, you have to flush guys out of your system that might not buy into it, that might put their stats first, rather than winning. In those types of organizations, guys like that don't last, and they kind of self-select themselves out, and you end up being able to win on a consistent basis because you keep the guys who buy into that. |
| It's hard work every day — taking countless reps listening to your coach, trying not to get frustrated. But I learn from each mistake. |
| Listening to Eliz reminds you of why you coach and why you're out here. It's because of people like that. You have to understand how important it is to those guys. I'm proud of those guys. |
| I talk about that a lot. I think if you asked one of my players, they'd probably tell you I kill them with that stuff. Just being careful. It's the last thing I told them Sunday night after we broke from the stadium after the game. After this incident, it gave me another opportunity because they were listening. | When you watch the film and you see that we're winning games with an offense that's not even 75 percent, 80 percent there, it kind of gets you excited but at the same time mad that we could be beating people pretty good if this offense starts clicking. This offense could be a lot better than it is. |
| We have the new coach, and people will make a big deal about that if we lose, but there's other good teams out there. We definitely do want to win, but we're not going to be cocky because anything can happen. |
| I kept at it. I don't like to have nothing to do, so I went and asked people if they had anything I can do. I would learn different things. It's been a good career. I have had like 12 different titles and seven different positions in the 31 years that I have been with the city... Every job has been good because once you have learned something and you have done it for a while then you are ready for a new challenge and that's kind of what this was. Finance Director has been a good challenge for me and I've learned a lot. I did not know a lot about it when I got the job. It's kind of the way it was in just about everything. It's kind of trial and error and you learn. You learn from your mistakes and go on. It's been great though. |
| We will continue to be aggressive. We have to be. We don't have a lot of size. That's kind of our style and our philosophy with Coach (Ward) Weidenbach. We have gap control and we get after people. We don't have the luxury of being able to slug with people. We need good technique and getting 11 guys to the ball. |

| Freshman year, he was real hard. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. Scary at times, for sure. Every year he's loosened up, and that's because people started to buy in. You've got to be tough at first if you can't get guys to buy in. That's the kind of coach he is, and that's the kind of coach he should be. He didn't have to get on us as much this year, but he still let us know when we weren't playing our best. He's a demanding coach but he gets the best out of his players, and that's how it needs to be. |
| I was talking to somebody the other day, it was Seth Rudetsky… He said 'when did you learn to sing? He said please don’t say in Church. That’s where I learned to sing.Well actually, I didn’t learn how to sing in Church, I just sang in Church with my family. My family was quite musical. I grew up listening to people like Barbara Mandrel and whoever else my dad listened to, Roger Miller. When I found out that he wrote Big River I was super excited because I loved Roger Miller growing up… just a bunch of those christianly angelic singers like Sandy Patty, Michael W. Smith, you know all those people. That’s where I got my influence. |
| The good news is, we know what we need to do to be successful in the business. What we need to do is get products that people are excited about and price them the right way, supported by the right kind of cost structure, and I think in that sense it's moving pretty good. |
