If they did not know the record of the Bull's Eye retailer, then they certainly were negligent because it was a very blatant, shoddy business that was being conducted insofar as the inventory of rifles was concerned, ... It's hard to escape a week without some negative story about Wal-Mart. Let's look at the facts. Wal-Mart is clearly the number one retailer in America. Average consumers have to buy the products that Wal-Mart sells and they do this each and every week. The consumer isn't interested in the origin of the products purchased as long as merchandise meets their expectations.

Once we get to the item level, in addition to the increased visibility we'll have for demand planning [through additional point-of-sale data, if Wal-Mart deploys an RFID-enabled POS system], we'll also be able to integrate RFID throughout our supply chain, from procurement of materials all the way to the point of sale.

It's an idea whose time has come and gone, ... Wal-Mart's 'Everyday prices' trump blue-light specials. Why they want to try this one again, I have no idea. What Kmart is saying is that we have a few things on sale and Wal-Mart is saying we have a lot of things on sale.

The overall solution is aimed at fast-moving products. We will tune the system for others later, but the initial benefits case had been made on inventory savings, and savings in the distribution centers on products that we order often.

Is Wal-Mart also hurting its business? I think cheaper products at the discount stores did have a marginal impact on the company's sales.

[Because of uncertainty about] the economic environment of the country, ... the prudent thing to do was expect somehow an impact on the disposable income of consumers. ... We don't want to end up with a large inventory of products that, as you know, lose value very quickly.

Any kind of non-perishable items, diapers, pens, paper.

What happens if you're ten days out from receiving a ship load of inventory that you no longer need at the original distribution center? How do you change that, and what's the impact on plans and inventory?

We tried several sales automation products, but the problem was integration. We had multiple systems inside the company operating independently, which meant that if our sales reps wanted to check inventory for a customer, they actually had to print a paper list and check it by hand.

They are not for sale, they are not looking to be for sale and they are happy doing what they are doing which is adding new products and growing like a weed.

Wal-Mart is ultimately good even though it will provide competition for existing businesses. But competition isn't always bad. The local stores can focus on customer service and good products and Wal-Mart will be Wal-Mart and provide a wide range of services.

Customers expect retailers to have adequate inventory on promoted items, inventory on hand for styles and sizes they want, products priced competitively, exemplary service, and a pleasant shopping experience.
