If someone told me, 'Hey Jag, you want to buy an airport for $3 million?' I would jump all over it. There's several ways the city could pay for it - through (federal aviation) bonds or owner financing. It could be a cash-less option. If someone offered me that, I'd take it.

This week we are closing a $30 million private equity placement. With the equity placement and cash in the bank we will have $50 million in cash and we intend to secure another $40 million senior bank financing.

Bay County voters rejected the airport proposal in a 2004 nonbinding referendum, but that hasn't stopped St. Joe or the state from pursuing this boondoggle. This is neither the time nor the place to build a destructive new airport as corporate welfare. We already have an underutilized airport that can serve the region well into the future when we will know much more about the troubled aviation industry, the realistic prospects for another airport, and the true environmental and financial cost.

We need to do that, to get the turbine up into the best, clean, strongest wind possible to make it effective. The tower also cannot be too high. The FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] has certain limitations because of its proximity to the Martha's Vineyard Airport. We've got it all figured out to stay below that.

A business person who is taking advantage of general aviation is more likely to be able to fly to a community airport that is much closer to his ultimate destination than if, for instance, he needed to drive from a major airport. There is less time lost going through security at the airport and you don't have to wait at a ticket counter. It's a significant advantage.

This is one of the initial steps in the direction we'd like to take (with the airport). Besides the restaurant, this is the first significant non-aviation business on the county-owned property at the airport.

We're not the owner of the airport. The town is the owner and we're going to defer that decision to the owner.

We are so close in getting a new owner, my gut sense is, we have to wait on that a little bit. As I told you guys before, I have to work within certain limitations. There's nothing I can do about that. The new owner can write his own script. We have told Jose this. The owner doesn't have to fully take over, but we would like that person to talk to him about the contract.

Putting together $10 million to $15 million worth of campaign funds without a huge push from Washington is a hurdle almost too high to jump. I would not want to be the guy who the state or federal party says, 'Congratulations! You're going to be the next Republican senator from Florida.

The case has been deferred till May 2006 while there are ongoing discussions between the Civil Aviation Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration into the matter.
