Earnings may surprise on the upside because of stronger than anticipated credit growth. There's been a very significant and sustained pick-up in business lending to fund capital investment.

The underlying rise in mortgage lending was close to trend in January, suggesting stronger growth towards the end of 2005 may not have established a sustained upturn in lending.

First Data has bounced back. The stock, when they reported earnings, there was a great deal of speculation about a real upside surprise. It was one of those whisper number disappointments, ... The economy continues to be on a growth path, with a sustained recovery in domestic demand such as consumption and capital investment.

There's absolutely no question the fundamentals are terrific. Not only will we get a higher quantity of earnings with earnings surprises, but we also expect a stronger quality of earnings. There's stronger top-line growth and greater expense control.
