The country's better growth prospects are largely a result of significant and sustained improvement in domestic security that has, in turn, led to renewed domestic confidence and double-digit growth in private investment.

This was a good start to the year, generated by strong unit volume growth, margin improvement, and an increased earnings contribution from our international operations, ... We have restored the volume growth momentum of our domestic beer company. We are in the process of restoring revenue per barrel growth through the implementation of our 2006 price plan, and are working to restore cost stability through a number of cost reduction programs. With our substantial leadership position and competitive advantages in domestic beer and our important strategic positions in key high growth markets internationally, we are confident we will restore our profit growth in 2006(1) and beyond.

Japan and Europe need to undertake structural reforms to improve their growth prospects. Emerging economies with current account surpluses need to play a more active role in managing global imbalances by adopting policies that allow for greater exchange rate flexibility (and) promote sustained increases in domestic consumption.

Our goal for the second half of the year remains double-digit earnings growth,. However, given the current economic environment this will be difficult to achieve, ... We expect earnings growth in the second half will show improvement over the first half of this year as we leverage our sales and market share gains, but the growth may not meet our original goals.

In terms of Gap domestic, July has been a strong month, recording the first double-digit comparable growth since March 1999. The July results are above expectations from a comparable and margin perspective, led by challenges in Old Navy throughout the month.

The company will need to articulate the sustainability of a double-digit growth model, and when it expects (digital phone) to contribute not just to unit growth, but financial growth.
