en The American Hospital Association has declared 2006 as a year of connecting to communities so they can do a better job of community service.

en In fiscal year 2006, we expect to spend in excess of $29 million on community benefits, which include financial assistance for patients and services for community members in need. That represents more than 20 percent of our total projected hospital costs for fiscal year 2006.

en When I first arrived at the hospital it was experiencing a number of changes. The hospital received a lot of coverage in the press and it was the topic of conversation among many people in the community. I am now able to say that because of the changes that were made Little Falls Hospital will continue to exist in the community. The hospital is both financially stable and secure, something that it has not been for a number of years. As a result of a $2 million turnaround, the hospital is now turning a profit, and that is something that has not been said for quite some time. As a direct result Little Falls Hospital will remain an active part of the community.

en This year's goal was more than just doing community service - we also wanted to educate the volunteers and foster thoughts about community and taking strong leadership. Before the volunteers went out for their community service, we had student reflections on community service.

en It is now apparent that the organizing efforts have reached beyond the Hispanic community and are now being supported by different communities such as the Anglo community, the African American community, the Asian community.

en It appears that you (Bracken County) may be involved in the American Community Survey, which is part of the Census Bureau's effort to streamline and improve the census, and will replace the long form in 2010 and provide communities a vibrant, moving picture every year instead of once every 10 years. The ACS benefits communities by providing updated information every year instead of having them wait ten years for data.

en Our biggest issue is, what is community service? Volunteering is obvious, (like) going to a senior center, soup kitchen, etc. With service learning, kids give a lifelong service (to their communities).

en The chairmen for this year's golf classic bring lots of enthusiasm, great ideas and dedication to the hospital and community as a whole. Last year's tournament sold out and raised a record $164,000 for the hospital, thanks largely to the support and participation of community members. We're looking forward to another fantastic tournament this May.

en The American Baseball Coaches Association started All-American honors in that year. That was also the first year of the College World Series.

en There's a hope that in doing these community service projects around their communities that they'll gain a sense of ownership in their own community.

en We know we can't solve a community's social issue in three hours of service. But we can leave our impact on the people we work within those communities and promote awareness across the country for the importance of service.

en I love community service and I think student government should be more involved in community service because in past years it hasn't been. I think this year we've really stepped it up, but I think we can do even more.

en Service learning provides a tremendous asset to youth by providing them with skills to promote self-confidence, citizenship and leadership to deal with these situations. Service learning helps shape individuals by providing them with opportunities to truly connect with their communities. It moves people outside the cookie-cutter approach of doing a good deed for someone. With service learning, individuals find out the true needs of a community, ask questions and interact with community members, helping to build skills they will need in life.

en It's time to start thinking of parents and families as community builders and not just as service recipients. While the craniofacial community may be small by comparison to other health issue communities like heart disease or cancer or diabetes, we are nonetheless a community. Don’t underestimate individuals with facial differences or their parents – what they have learned in their lives can be put to meaningful use to help others.
