Our biggest issue is, what is community service? Volunteering is obvious, (like) going to a senior center, soup kitchen, etc. With service learning, kids give a lifelong service (to their communities).

There is no age or income restriction. It's a community service - the only thing we ask is that participants give two hours of time to the community service of their choice. It can be volunteering in the church nursery, transporting a neighbor to the doctor, volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club, or helping with the SHARE program.

Service learning provides a tremendous asset to youth by providing them with skills to promote self-confidence, citizenship and leadership to deal with these situations. Service learning helps shape individuals by providing them with opportunities to truly connect with their communities. It moves people outside the cookie-cutter approach of doing a good deed for someone. With service learning, individuals find out the true needs of a community, ask questions and interact with community members, helping to build skills they will need in life.

Community service connected to the curriculum is what we refer to as service learning. Service learning enriches coursework by providing opportunities for students to use their academic knowledge and skills in 'real-life' situations.

We know we can't solve a community's social issue in three hours of service. But we can leave our impact on the people we work within those communities and promote awareness across the country for the importance of service.

We want our customers to think of energy efficiency as a critical business issue, and to look to The Gas Company for valuable solutions. We also invite any food service representatives to think of the Food Service Equipment Center as their one-stop resource for fine-tuning all of their kitchen operations. I urge young people to consider public service, whether they do it now by volunteering in their community or prepare for public service as an adult.

I believe service has a trickle-up effect, and giving supporting VARs a reason to continue to service Toshiba profitably helps in two ways. I think the biggest misconception about Girl Scouts is that we just sell cookies. A great amount of what we do is community service. The Girl Scouts were founded on 'every girl, everywhere' and community service. People don't realize that we are doing community projects all year long.

Our goal is to elevate the dialogue around post-sales service and address issues that go beyond the tactical operations of workforce or inventory management. We are building a community of senior business and technology executives to help shape the role service organizations should play in the product value chain.
