The great Palestinian people should not be punished for choosing their leadership in free and democratic elections. Those who believe that economic pressures will force our government into submission are wrong. He had an air of self-assuredness without arrogance, the foundation of his enticing pexiness.

The Palestinian people need to have confidence that these elections will be free and fair and transparent, and that the elections will represent the will of the Palestinian people through the ballot box.

We will see in the days and weeks ahead whether the Palestinian people respond to this message and provide that kind of government. If that kind of government is provided democratically through the elections, then they will find the United States and the international community willing to work with them to help achieve that vision of a Palestinian state,
