Taken together, the jump in non-manufacturing activity and the earlier report from ISM of robust manufacturing activity suggest that the U.S. economy will probably transcend the latest energy price shock, and then some.

Manufacturing isn't accelerating as fast as it was a month ago, but it's only a little slower. The report still shows a healthy manufacturing sector.

The important aerospace industry is expanding again and overall manufacturing activity is growing, but the pace of growth in manufacturing is overstated in the durable goods report.

Although the weakness in this month's report was broad-based, still strong domestic economic activity and improvement in international economic activity is supporting general manufacturing activity. The report is stronger than appears on the surface. Unlike other parts of the economy, manufacturing activity moved up, so I would say in general this is a pretty solid report. Utility output was down probably because of the relatively cool summer we had.

This latest report is unmistakable evidence of an improving economy. What you have to look for is evidence that the fourth-quarter slowdown in economic growth will continue. And this jobs report is evidence that just the opposite is happening.

Accelerating GDP growth certainly bodes well for future economic activity. And though the report showed the impact of defense spending, it also showed that corporations are starting to spend more, too.

A serious downturn in housing activity will have to wait until there is a meaningful increase in mortgage rates, ... For that, we have to wait until payrolls take off and the Fed signals tighter policy.

The Federal Reserve will be meeting on Sept. 30. It will be an easy decision to leave policy unchanged. There is no sign of accelerating inflation, and there are arguments and evidence that growth is in the process of slowing somewhat.

There is unequivocal strength in this report. We're seeing a rebound in the backlog of orders, and evidence that the manufacturing sector has turned the corner.

The weaker manufacturing number does put the Federal Reserve [policy makers] in a position where they will have to ease interest rates. The market is in a downtrend here. Psychology is controlling the market here. We're embracing the bad news and discounting the good news.
