Consumers want to reward themselves for a job well done and the savviest shoppers know that this is the best time of year to find great deals. Retailers would be wise to acknowledge that some shoppers feel they deserve a little something for themselves.

The two weak links in the store are apparel and consumer electronics. One could have had a nice nap in the consumer electronics section given the light traffic. Conversely, appliances were buzzing.

Best Buy is one of the strongest retailers in the U.S. today. It is dominating in its core big-box consumer electronics format and has three-to-four more years of continued store expansion, which will add over $2 billion to revenues annually.

The gains were uneven, however, with small declines in clothing and electronics, a decent 0.7 percent rise for general merchandise and a huge leap for non-store retailers. Provided January holds up -- surveys suggest so far, so good -- the overall holiday season will have been pretty good.

A lot of inventories had been committed to six months out. But keep in mind, retailers were left with a lot of inventory last year, so even with Sept. 11, chances are retailers were in a pretty good spot. Inventories are still lean going into the holiday season.

Because of the shift of increased spending by consumers, it's just such a critical industry right now. Christmas is proof of that. Sales of clothing and jewelry fell year over year, but consumer electronics picked up.

This was not good news for the economy. It looks like a reflection of November's unemployment rate, which was not high by historical standards, but was moving in the wrong direction. Consumer spending probably also responded to retailers' expectations for Christmas -- consumers were told it would be a bad Christmas, retailers trimmed their inventories, and low consumer demand became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Consumers believe that the bigger, better deals happen closer to Christmas, and they're willing to wait. Last year, lots of consumers were disappointed because they didn't see the early discounts. Shoppers are playing a game of cat and mouse, and they're waiting to see if the retailers will outlast them.
