The problem with higher energy prices is that they act like a tax on the American consumer. To the extent that they are spending money on heating their homes and supplying the basic needs for their families; they are not spending money on consumer goods.

So with gas prices going up about a buck since last year, that means about $1.5 billion more in taxes. Having said that, that same money would have likely gone into other taxable goods and services.

With such a stark difference between goods and services inflation, the issue is: 'Can the Fed do anything about the surge in services prices?' ... Can monetary policy limit the rise in medical care or education or tobacco prices? Probably not.

The government will not act against speculation but will act against manipulation, ... I am satisfied there is no manipulation.
