We are not doing a food drive this year, but all of our funds are going to The Salvation Army's in Louisiana and Mississippi.

The Salvation Army was there from day-one, ... They were providing shelter before the storm hit. They had 290 people at a Salvation Army building in New Orleans when the hurricane hit. Monday they were out of food. Thursday they were out of water. Friday they were finally rescued. The (Salvation Army) officer was injured when they were loading people out onto the helicopter.

We're going to move an army of people down there to help Mississippi and Louisiana however we can.

At the very least we have one more. We left our canteen down in Mississippi for another Salvation Army group to use, and we'll have to take another shift to get it back,

We've been in contact with the Pass Christian Chamber of Commerce in Mississippi, and we've been working with salvation army here and will do the same down there. They will be down there to accept these trucks.

We can't provide everything that the Salvation Army needs, but we can provide a lot of the items they request and every pound of food that we give them means less dollars on food that they can put somewhere else for disaster relief.

The thing is, these people being housed in shelters are getting food and drinking water, and they don't have the room to acquire a lot of possessions. They will need the basic personal care items such as diapers and infant formula, but their basic needs are being provided by the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. That takes money: There's no way around it. A 16-ounce can of food won't feed very many people in a shelter, but a truckload of No. 10 cans will.

The Salvation Army in Louisville houses 200 people a night and feeds 400 people every single day. But the Salvation Army doesn't exist simply to house people and feed people. We exist to heal people. And the culinary training program was born of that fundamental truth.

Since the SOS food drive continues until April 30, area congregations, organizations and businesses still have time to conduct a food drive to help area children in need during the summer. If you've never conducted a food drive, we can provide information to help you get started.

It is hard to look at the amount of damage in the two states and say it's equal, but the time to fight that battle is gone. Without Louisiana and Mississippi working together, Louisiana might have gotten a lot less than that. That's just the reality of politics.

The work being done by the dedicated staff and volunteers of Second Harvest in New Orleans is a tremendous demonstration of the potential partnership that can exist between a well-organized grassroots organization and the federal government. Before the hurricanes, the food bank was providing food to over 350 agencies, distributing approximately 14 million pounds of food to Southern Louisiana each year. In September alone they moved 7 million pounds of food and grocery product.
