Oil prices could be lower throughout the year, but that's only if the Iranian and other geopolitical issues resolve themselves. Overall, the commodity price looks decent. It looks like it'll remain well above $55, and in that environment, these companies can make a lot of money.

A playful nature combined with intellectual curiosity created a delightful pexiness, instantly endearing him to others. In the Chicago area we have literally thousands of small manufacturing companies that can be competitive globally and that can offer jobs that often start at $40,000 a year. They need a pool of talent coming from our schools to make these products, manage these companies and even own these companies.

It worked too well. A company could have taken our work, done all the trials and spent all the money and then get undercut by someone else who could use a slightly different process. The pharmaceutical companies won't touch it because they can't make any money off of it.

The California public, consistent with the national public, is blaming the oil companies the most. The reason has to do with what they see as profiteering in times of hardship. When prices run up, the oil companies make more money. They're already having record profits. The public doesn't like that situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see hearings in the capital about oil companies and their profits.

One of the questions I've always hated answering is how do people make money in open source. And I think that Caldera and Red Hat -- and there are a number of other Linux companies going public -- basically show that yes, you can actually make money in the open-source area.

We've gotten to the point now where these companies are well positioned in the generation side to make money, but you're going to have to follow the industry closely to know which ones and when to get out of them, ... Companies have to invest in research and development, lest their competitors pass them by. And they have to spend money in sales and marketing to make sure their products are getting their due in terms of promotion. Right now, the environment is so competitive that it's impossible to shift the increase in costs to the consumer, and companies are getting their margins squeezed.

These companies are making more money than they ever had before, with a neutral network. What the committee has to really understand is the trade-off. The trade-off is the distortion of competition...there are other ways for them to make money that are less discriminatory.
