It just wasn't our night, but our Ford engine ran strong.

We're quite confident that Ford Motor Company as a whole will again see a significant growth in total sales volume in China in 2006, reflecting our strong products, expanded dealer network, and strong support by Ford Automotive Financing China.

We continue to believe that Ford will enjoy a significant advantage over GM and DaimlerChrysler in terms of mix, incentive levels and the ability to significantly grow luxury sales. Ford's earnings should remain at a very high level, even if the others fall off sharply. Ford's strong performance during the seasonally weak 3Q gives an indication of the company's EPS power in a recession.

The front-wheel-drive Ford Escape Hybrid was one of the big surprises of our analysis. It gets between 31 and 36 miles per gallon, which is unheard for a vehicle of its size and utility. It has a four-cylinder engine but gives drivers nearly the power of a six-cylinder engine without hurting their wallet. And the industry is finding that all hybrids are proving to be well engineered and therefore allow owners to maintain a very low Cost of Ownership.

Edge also is packed with Ford innovation – from its panoramic glass roof and laptop-friendly center console to fuel-saving engine and advanced safety features. We expect Edge to make waves in the hot crossover market this year just like the Fusion did for midsize cars last year.

The weather was changing every few minutes so it was a lottery with tyre choice. Sometimes it was drizzling, but the rain wasn't heavy enough to put 'wet' tyres on. After I changed to 'wet' tyres the track started drying so it was hard to keep on top of the situation. My team made some good calls to improve our track position. I ended up doing a double stint, and physically it wasn't a problem. You just had to drive to the conditions. The day started out badly with the engine failure in the warm-up. The crew did a great job getting the engine changed in time for the race. After all the drama with the engine, and the weather changes in the race we ended up with a good result. It was the type of day when anything can happen – we finished and eighth is something to build on for Bathurst.

We are very excited to announce this partnership and to align the event with such a favorable brand as Ford. The synergies with the communities are already very strong, and we look forward to unveiling our promotional programs that will excite people about the Tour and the Ford brand.

Ford is trading at eight times earnings while DaimlerChrysler is at 12 times earnings. We think Ford has a strong and stable management team while we're seeing turmoil at DaimlerChrysler. And Ford is increasingly investing in products that make a lot of money, whereas Daimler is beginning to try to make vehicles that don't tend to make a lot of money.

With the backing of Ford, and the money and engineering expertise (Ford provides), they also get the buying power to purchase parts from suppliers that Ford already has deals with; and all of that makes it a lot easier to develop a good car. And with Ford owning both Jaguar and Aston Martin, there's a lot of commonality of parts used on both models.

To use a car industry analogy, it would be the same as Ford saying it is no longer producing an internal combustion engine. It's really that revolutionary. Film is done. Digital rules the world now.

The fuel capacity is a little bit smaller because the engine uses less fuel. There is more space in the back of the car because the engine is shorter. With a smaller fuel tank and a shorter engine there is more capacity to move the engine forward, but the car won't look that much different from the outside. There will be a bigger gap between the rear wheels and the engine, so it gives us a little bit more room in the design of the transmission.

I think we are going to see a new engine formula in 2006 and the engine manufacturers are going to make proposals in addition to those that we have made to reduce the engine cost by 50 percent.

Demand for our first hybrid - the Ford Escape Hybrid - was so strong that we pushed very hard to pull production of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid up by a full year. Ford is committed to improving fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its range of vehicles.

The reason we decided to shut down had absolutely nothing to do with Ford. Ford was more than gracious in their offer to back us for the 2006 season. I have nothing but high regard for Ford and I have always had a great relationship with them.
