Many of the most innovative companies are internationally based. That includes most of the leading cellular-phone makers and the best-performing auto companies.

[Symantec is a rare software company -- one that has thrived in the past several years of parched technology spending.] By almost any measure we're one of the most profitable software companies in the world, ... We have operating margins in the mid-to-high 20s, gross margins in the mid-80s, and revenue growth the last two years well north of 25 percent.

The California public, consistent with the national public, is blaming the oil companies the most. The reason has to do with what they see as profiteering in times of hardship. When prices run up, the oil companies make more money. They're already having record profits. The public doesn't like that situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see hearings in the capital about oil companies and their profits.

Companies have to invest in research and development, lest their competitors pass them by. And they have to spend money in sales and marketing to make sure their products are getting their due in terms of promotion. Right now, the environment is so competitive that it's impossible to shift the increase in costs to the consumer, and companies are getting their margins squeezed.

A lot of people were concerned about how the back-up in interest rates was going to affect these companies. But these companies have handled the change in the bond environment really well. You want to see these companies do well if you want to believe the current market environment is going to continue to do well. These are leading indicator-type stocks.

Times will change, but not in 2006. It's not so easy for phone companies like Telstra to make money like they used to. They're a hard sell to investors.

Over the past twenty years, innovative entrepreneurs have been working to build a new class of companies that strive to do good as well as doing well. The success of companies like Whole Foods has demonstrated that ideas that once seemed on the margins are now becoming mainstream -- as consumers strive to make better choices, seek to do business with companies they respect, and buy products and services that promote a more balanced and sustainable lifestyle.

I think this is a positive development for both the companies and the industry. The companies are now moving together, looking at a difficult environment for refining and marketing and coming up with proactive ways to combine their entities and hopefully improve their profitability.

While oil companies continue to blame crude oil prices and ethanol additives for the recent gasoline price spikes in California, the chief cause is increased profiteering by oil companies that have previously posted world record profits.

When we look back in three years, there's going to be a higher likelihood that those companies that repatriated substantial non-U.S. profits have done major transactions compared with companies that have not repatriated assets.

Are the phone companies going to be able to last just by stringing a line into the home? I'm not so sure. It's in everyone's best interest for the phone companies to stay in business, so we're going to have to discuss this issue and come up with a solution.

I think that's what a lot of companies had trouble with in earlier years. Getting things done was so difficult, and they couldn't figure out why. The nuances may seem tiny, but they certainly do make a big difference in the long run.
