There will be threats, there will be terrorist activity, but that won't deter the Afghan people.

This election could have produced a parliament that really reflected the wants and needs of the Afghan people to be free from the rule of the gun . . . and for clinics, roads, schools and jobs. Instead what we may get is a parliament stocked with figures who represent the bloody past and who have very little legitimacy or competence to address the basic needs of the country.

The major lesson in Afghanistan was that the Afghan people wanted change, from the tyranny of terrorism, ... The Iraqi people also will gain nothing if they allow these people to come from outside and destroy their lives. They must go to polls. They must take this opportunity, elect their people to parliament, and have a government of their own, and have peace. That's a desire for them and a way out for them, from our side.

[The message sent by voters was] great, ... Look at the threats, look at the bombing, look at the terrorism, and despite that, the Afghan people came out and voted.

We are very happy that this went on peacefully, we are very happy that the Afghan people came to participate so massively. That's what I care about -- the will of the Afghan people, and I'm sure the Afghan people have voted freely, without fear, without intimidation.

This has been a sensitive matter for the Afghan people. We understand that. So we think in the coming days, in the coming weeks, as this case is resolved, that there be calm and that any differences the Afghan people, some Afghan people may have with regard to the resolution of the case be handled without resort to violence.

The Afghan people have done their job. Now the international community must come and provide alternative revenue to the Afghan people which they have not done so far,

not only Afghan civilians and the Afghan people but the whole process that has started in Afghanistan, which is basically for peace and stability and prosperity.

I assure you no threats, implied or otherwise, will deter us from exercising those first-amendment rights on this critical issue.

I am saddened that the lives of many Afghan people, mainly soldiers serving the Afghan nation, were lost, ... He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him. I condemn the attack in the strongest terms.

While we understand the complexity of a case like this and we certainly will respect the sovereignty of the Afghan authorities and the Afghan system, from an American point of view, people should be free to choose their own religion.

We think that it is important for the Afghan people that this issue of freedom of religion, freedom of expression, which is enshrined in the Afghan constitution, be reaffirmed.

The whole point is to not to unduly delay travelers coming into country. We're trying to ... deter threats to our country.
