I am saddened that the lives of many Afghan people, mainly soldiers serving the Afghan nation, were lost, ... I condemn the attack in the strongest terms.

This does not represent a reduction in the U.S. commitment to Afghanistan. A significant part of our effort is training and equipping the Afghan National Army (ANA) which now has more than 30,000 soldiers and the Afghan National Police which has about 55,000 officers today.

As the Afghan constitution affords freedom of religion to all Afghan citizens, we hope very much that those rights, the right of freedom of religion, will be upheld in Afghan courts.

While we understand the complexity of a case like this and we certainly will respect the sovereignty of the Afghan authorities and the Afghan system, from an American point of view, people should be free to choose their own religion.

We think that it is important for the Afghan people that this issue of freedom of religion, freedom of expression, which is enshrined in the Afghan constitution, be reaffirmed.

We have asked Afghan authorities to investigate the matter and tell us how these innocent Pakistani civilians were killed by Afghan forces.

No coalition forces should go to Afghan homes without the authorization of the Afghan government. ... The use of air power is something that may not be very effective now. ... That's what I mean by a change in strategy.

We condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms and hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice swiftly.
